The Year of Jubilee

Toa Payoh Methodist Church celebrates her 50th Anniversary in 2020.

In the Old Testament, every 50th year from the Israelites’ settlement in the Promised Land was set by God for them to observe as the Jubilee (Leviticus Chap 25). It reminded them that God had indeed saved them out of slavery in Egypt and brought them into the Promised Land – to be a people belonging to God.

What the Exodus was for the Israelites, the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ is for us – the defining event that revealed to us who God is, who we are to him, and what his will is for us. In Christ, the ideas that the Jubilee signify become spiritually true for the Church as the New Covenant-al people of God.

So on this our first Jubilee, let us celebrate our 50 years of being God’s people – of having been saved by God through Christ, brought into his kingdom and built up as his people. And let us recommit ourselves to living as God’s people, authentically loving God, one another and our neighbours. We pray that the Jubilee Fund project and the other Jubilee events will help us as a church to do this and celebrate our Jubilee meaningfully this year.

50 years as God’s people.
Thanks be to God and to him be all the glory!

Leaders' Messages

Happy 50th TPMC! As we enter into our 50th year of existence, we enter also into a year of celebration.

However, simply focusing on celebration would I believe, lessen the significance of the 50th. Because we do not just want to focus on the now, but also to remember the past and anticipate the future.

At this milestone in our existence, remembering the past in how and why God placed us where He has placed us; remembering how He has led us through the years and what He has accomplished through us, just causes the 50th and therefore the celebration to be more meaningful.

But we also have to have an eye on the future. An eye anticipating what God wants to do through and with us. Surely celebrating the 50th isn’t the end point of TPMC but a part of our journey. And surely, our goal isn’t just to make it through another 50 years. Our goal rather, is to ensure that we continue to do what He calls us to do for as long as He sees fit for us to do so.

And so, once again, Happy 50th TPMC! May we celebrate the now, remember the past and anticipate the future as one and with God.

"Someone's sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago" Warren Buffet.

As we enter our 50th year of encountering God in TPMC as a body, we are reminded of and are thankful for God's faithfulness in raising generations of faithful brothers and sisters. They have heard His calling and have decided to invest their lives in the community here; both clergy and laity, despite challenging circumstances. We now enjoy the comfort of modern church facilities while seeing fruits of authentic followers of Jesus and growing ministries. Thank you TPMC for the selfless giving of yourselves in service of love.

In the midst of disruptive changes today, it calls for us to rethink how to invest ourselves in this community further, both inside and outside the church walls, so that our generations to come may continue to encounter God and "sit in the shade" of God's faithfulness through us. Happy 50th!

This year marks our celebration of TPMC’s Golden Jubilee. The Golden Jubilee usually refers to the 50th anniversary of an event, and this year, we mark the 50 years since TPMC was founded. But the Golden Jubilee is more than just a marker of the passage of time. In Leviticus 25:8, the Year of Jubilee refers to the year after seven cycles of seven years (49 years). This 50th year is meant to be a time of celebration and rejoicing, but it is also noteworthy to know that the Year of Jubilee marks a release from indebtedness, and liberty is to be proclaimed throughout the land. In this year of TPMC’s Golden Jubilee, as we celebrate this milestone with food, fellowship, and fun among friends and with the wider Toa Payoh community, let’s also remember to proclaim the liberty upon us because of Jesus’ finished work on the cross. Done for our sakes. Done out of love. Done.

Jubilee Fund

The Jubilee Fund is created to fund new initiatives in our outreach efforts to impact the Toa Payoh community and our overseas mission fields. Learn more about what these initiatives are in the Q and A section. We thank you for your generosity.

We are aiming for a faith target of $500,000.

The Jubilee Fund will enable us to fund the following initiatives:

  1. To expand our ability to help more poor and needy families from the current 25 families to 50 families for the next 5 years.
  2. To support the Rough Sleepers Ministry (Night Shelter for the Homeless) in TPMC for next 5 years.
  3. To plant 2 churches in Southeast Asia for 5 years. After 5 years, these 2 churches should be financially independent. Mittaphap Methodist Church in Shan, Thailand is the first church started late 2019 through our missionary Angela Sng.
  4. To bless a Bible School or a Seminary with a one off donation in support of their mission to raise the next generation of Christian leaders and teachers.

No, the Jubilee Fund will be used solely for the initiatives to enhance TPMC’s outreach efforts. There is a separate budget for the organisation of the 50th Anniversary events.
